This is how I'm going to try and teach myself stick. Still haven't figured out what I can substitute for a clutch pedal though. If you haven't figured it out I'm in an automatic car with an upside down flashlight inside the cup holder.

Use the brake pedal - it'll simulate your terrible and jerky shifts :3

Buy a 500 dollar shit box manual car and hoon it until it begs for mercy. That's how I learned how to drive stick.

Use a giant sponge taped to the floor:

This really won't help you at all. If you have the basic idea down, you just need to get behind the wheel.

Look, some of us are trying to get people to tape sponges to the floor. Don't ruin it.

As a fellow Josh, just pretend. I've tried driving a stick a couple of times. The hardest part is getting into first and going forward. The rest is easy.

FYI, I use a pop bottle in the cup holder, :).

This. Your setup won't help you learn to drive stick. Nothing works better than learning in a real car.

Have you ever driven stick before?

If I'm pretending, I usually pretend with the clutch, not the shifter. The clutch is more difficult I thought. You can't come to a complete stop without the car turning off. So at lights, you leave the clutch in. And you have to keep your eye on the rpms (if you can't hear the engine that is).

I'm eagerly waiting to get my first car paid off, so I can get a 2nd car that is a stick, :).

some coworkers convinced a new guy that putting enough tape with sticky side out will reduce dust fibers at construction site and had him swinging it around like a racket. We're assholes.

I applaud your effort, but driving a stick is more of a feeling. But once you get it, you don't forget it.
